A quest novel involves a physical odyssey in which the main character sets out to search for something and usually comes to a greater understanding of life
1. THINK, PAIR, SHARE BLOG POST:
In the first three chapters, the Mexican village of Tres Camarones is affected by a number of forces that challenge the traditional way of life. Though the border seems far away from this rural village, economic realities have brought its influences closer to home than ever before.
Discuss the following questions with a partner and post a comment for credit on the blog:
• What are some examples of the old ways or traditional aspects of life in Tres Camarones?
• What are some examples of changing times in Tres Camarones?
• What forces (economic, technological, cultural) are driving change in Tres Camarones?
2. Character chart
Work on the character chart to keep track of the different characters. Cite pg. numbers from your reading where the author provides description of the characters.

Mexican beauty queen Susana Flores María Gámez, winner of Mujer
Sinaloa 2012 contest, her boyfriend and three other people were killed
over the weekend in a confrontation that involved military and a group
of armed men.
The killings took place in the small town of Caitime, in Sinaloa.
The State Ministerial Police confirmed Monday that the 22-year-old was with the alleged attackers Saturday night, who confronted the soldiers in a safe house.
Flores was elected Mujer Sinaloa in February 2012, and in 2009 was named Model of the Year. Selected Miss Oriental Tourism México, in May she represented the country at the Miss Oriental Tourism International, held in China.
In addition to Flores and her boyfriend, the scuffle took the life of two of the soldiers and one more civilian.
According to information provided by the Ministry of National Defense (SEDENA) to the daily newspaper Milenio, a military convoy was patrolling Caitime streets when it was attacked by gunmen who later took refuge in a safe house.
To repel the aggression the soldiers killed one of the men, after which the attackers were able to flee the home and escape.
They were chased then to a neighboring town, where Flores was reached by a bullet.
The armed group is said to be linked with Orso Iván Gastélum, also known as El Cholo Iván or El Cholo Vago, alleged head of the Sinaloa cartel hitmen in the region of Evora.
In the safe house authorities found seven AK-47 fusion, a grenade launcher, two grenades, a .40 mm caliber rifle and a thousand rounds, and six vehicles (one armored).
Susana Flores’ killing follows the death of the former mayor of Tiquicheo, María Santos Gorrostieta, just over 10 days ago.
Gorrostieta, 36, had served from 2008 until early this year as the mayor of the small town, where several drug gangs, including La Familia Michoacana, are active.
Mexico's drug war has claimed the lives of at least 656 women through the end of October this year, out of 10,485 total deaths, according to Milenio.

ReplyDelete1. Some examples of traditional aspects in Tres Camerones are peoples defiance towards new electricity and technology. There is internet connection, but very few people have it.
2. Some examples of changing times are when Nayeli and Tia Irma go to the market and discover that the beans they want to buy are no longer from Mexico, but from the United States. Now there is internet connection and electricity in the town, though it is frowned upon by many adults. Through the internet, teenagers like Nayeli and her friends have access to American pop culture, like Johnny Depp.
3. Some of the forces driving change in Tres Camerones are that there are no men left, therefore no women are pregnant, the entire town is very poor and Banditos come in and dominate whenever they feel like it. Girls Nayeli's age feel sort of trapped in the town.

3. Economic forces are driving change because its making the men move to America to find jobs. Technological forces are causing people to be more modern because they have to use electricity and the internet etc.
1. The men leave and go to the United States to find jobs and support their families back home. Also they sit around and listen to radios to see what was going on.
ReplyDelete2. They began to have Internet and computers also people are starting to express their self.
3.Economically they are poor. Technology wise they have computers and radios so they can stay up to date with the music in the untied states and new fashions and basically our way of life. With their culture they start to dress kind of mixed the untied states culture with theirs.

ReplyDelete1) The entire town of Tres Camarones is very traditional. They have old ways that seem to work out for them. They eat beans and tortillas commonly, despite corn tortillas being expensive. They have old fashioned cobblestone roads, most likely due to the fact that they can't afford asphalt. "The rubes down here had apparently never heard of blacktop. It was all dirt roads and cobblestones" (page 6). Similar to the ways they have no paved roads, they also have no plumbing systems. Instead, they use outhouses. "They shook their heads, greatly offended. The other one pointed. 'Outhouses!' he scoffed" (page 6). "There was no major highway going through; [...]no hotel or tourist trap. [...]At any rate, nobody had ever worried about maps--on the official Pemex highway guides, Tres Camarones didn't even exist" (page 12). Despite the old forms of life, they all seemed content with it, because it's the only lifestyle they know.
2) The fact of the slowly modernizing town is a big example of coming change in Tres Camarones. Several places have already been wired in and are internationally connected with the world. "They were slightly pleased, yet jealous, when they noted one of the small houses had a satellite dish" (page 6). The citizens can use this technology to be connected with the world through YouTube and the Internet. Nayeli and her friends enjoy using YouTube to look up fun videos and interesting American music. Nayeli also likes watching American movies. The Internet helps the citizens stay more modern, even though their way of life isn't.
3) There are very many economic problems that the citizens of Tres Camarones have to go through. There aren't a lot of job opportunities, and when there are, the pay is low. The fact that there aren't that many men to work and porivde for their families in Tres Camarones doesn't help the situation either. "Suddenly, there was no work. All the shrimp were shipped north, tortillas became too expensive to eat, and people started to go hungry" (page 4). People in the town don't really want change, either. Perhaps one of the most modernizing changes of the town, however, is the fact that a woman will be running for mayor. "Irma, sick and tired of the ancient mayor of Tres Camarones, [...] was making history by running to replace him in the next election. It would be a first: Irma Garcia Cervanted. the first female Municipal President of Tres Camarones" (page 9). Despite some changes coming by themselves, urged by the lack of tolerance for lazy work, some harder changes are coming. The bandidos pose a threat to the citizens, and will inevitably drive more people up north to get away from them.

ReplyDelete2]internet is now available in Tres Camarones but very few have them. The men have immigrated to the beautiful north and they are not dependent of candles and lamps since there is now electricity
3]the economic forces that were diving change is the lower value in peso, in technological force was the media such as radio, the internet and radio and in cultural changes the people learn more about the beautiful north by artists, movies etc.
1) The town Tres Camarones barely uses electricity, that at times they have to go to the ocean to fish.
ReplyDelete2) There's internet but a few have it. The men that left town immigrated to the North to help out their family because of shortage of money.
3) Technological has been changing the Tres Camarones because as the town gains new stuff they start learning new few things from the North that makes them want them to go over there and experience it. And also there's no men which does not help them that much since the town is weak because of the attacks from the bandidos that they need protection.
