Alexander Christie is currently a 9th grade creative writing major at School of the Arts. He is 13 years old. He currently lives with his parents in Rochester, New York and has a sister studying theatre in New York City. In his free time, he enjoys reading books and writing short stories. His family is very supportive of his writing and everything else he is invested in. Although he hasn’t written any long term pieces of writing, he hopes to write and publish a novel someday. Aside from writing, he also enjoys singing, dancing, and acting in various productions. He loves living in an arts community and being able to do the things he loves. Going into his 9th grade year, he is excited to be learning new things about writing and himself. He hopes that he can continue to express himself through the arts after school, and share his knowledge with the world.

  2. I think that not everyone should be restricting by certain writing rules and laws, everyone should write how they wanna write but if you wanna be professional and do things correct you would need to technically right things how they're supposed to be written and to do that you would need to learn basic English and grammar and go on from then. To be a free form writer if you want people to truly understand you and your writing you need to understand that things like this need to be grammatically correct, some [people are often triggered by not having the correct grammar or having certain incorrect or not written right, or some people are very scarcity about having certain laws on words. But personally i think that writing should be free form to write what you wanna write. also i put many and various grammar errors in this paragraph(on purpose) to prove you dont need to follow every writing law to be able to understand someone

  4. Language is such a broad thing to discuss and everyone has their own opinions about the topic. Not everyone will talk the way I do or that one of my friends or family will. Some people aren't respectful when it come to language while others are. They will talk differently while in front of different crowds.

  5. Well language is something that is important. Because not everyone is going to understand your slang and that is why we need to speak proper grammar. Most people don't really care about grammar and speak a messy language aka slang. Not learning grammar is something that can affect you since you probably wouldn't know how to form proper sentences which is a need in society.

  6. Honestly I feel like he kind of dragged it. My own experiences with language and grammar... I used to be upset when people would correct me, and NOW I correct others. Stephen Fry's concept was something that I really liked. Overall I could watch it again.

    1. It's always nice to have an opinion, it helps people understand your point of view to compare or apply to their thoughts.

  7. Language is a very important in our daily lives and it's also a cultural thing that needs to be understood by everyone. Not everyone is going to speak the way you want them to or speak the same as you. Language and grammar can be interpreted different ways. There isn't just one way. I think the man in the video was very angry and was just seeing language and grammar how we wanted to without putting other views in perspective. he was only thinking about what he wanted language and grammar to be.

  8. language is different for every person depending on where they originate from and how they grew up. Britain has a different way of speaking than people from Australia and they each have slang that would only be familiar to the citizens of that area. If you were to take a vacation somewhere new you would have to learn their language.

  10. In the video, the narrator talked about his opinion on language and what means to be a "good writer". I agree that language is a universal thing and their may be rules but not everyone needs to follow them. The rules should be broken because if someone does not break the barrier between what is good writing and what is wrong, we would never grow. All different languages are beautiful, whether if it's conventional or a little off standard like Shakespeare old writing. However, writing should be shared with the world not just to those who are quote on quote authors.

  11. Anthony R
In response to the video, Stephen Fry conveyed his thoughts and feelings of grammar and language astonishingly well and truly reached out to me and I was able to understand where he was coming from.
For me, language and grammar have always been something I took into account into my writing whenever I would write a fable or an actual experience I had. I would always double and sometimes triple check to make sure everything I had laid down onto paper or computer was simple to understand and showed my thoughts on the matter.
Understanding how grammar and language is shown to others can really open a flood gate of thoughts and ideas. Everyone can come together to really understand each other and that's what I feel is most important about grammar and language.

  12. Traditional English and grammar has always been a difficult subject for me to learn, especially because I grew up around English slang. My teachers have always told me that I don't "speak correctly", but this video has taught me that there is no "correct way to speak", but there are different ways to speak. Formal English and English slang are both used just as commonly, but they are used in different locations and situations. For example, if you are with your friends or family, you may speak a more slang English....and if you are at a job interview you will speak more formal.

  13. I thought the video was very interesting. This video taught me that code switching, language and dialogue in writing is very important. Speaking slang isn't bad shouldn't be used in writing. I also learned about grammar and differences between words, language can be interpreted and discussed in many different ways

  14. The video was based on grammar, such as calling them names and also judging them by the way people speak. Grammar means a lot because most don't have much of it our use shot cuts of words just as if they would when they text friends ect.

Kanene is 14 years old and is now in her freshman year of high school. She discovered her passion for reading in kindergarten and ever since then, she has always loved to read almost as much as she needs to breathe. However, she often found that the stories she read had certain details that she wanted to revise. So Kanene began to rewrite those stories and found that she relished it. She also began to read her stories out loud to the rest of her class during writer's workshop and found that she really enjoyed that as well. And soon she fell in love with it. She loved being in control of every detail and every character. Writing became something she did whenever she wanted to relinquish her thoughts and emotions from her mind without completely losing them. It became her life-long passion and something she wanted to make a career out of. Although Kanene's never felt completely supported by her family in her passion for reading and writing, she was extremely excited when she was accepted to SOTA. Now she finds inspiration in other talented writers including her peers and in the events that happen around her and in her life. Kanene plans to go to college for journalism or creative writing and after college, she plans to become a travel writer/author. Her main goal is to become an inspirational world-famous author. However, before all that, she wants to better her skills as a writer and she knows that if she works hard and stays focused, then she can do just about anything she sets her mind to.
