Last, but not least, post on the blog a paragraph about your interpretation of the poem.
Answer the following questions:

Why did you select this particular poem to interpret in Moviemaker?

What specific choices did you make about the text, the imagery, the figurative language (metaphors, similes, personification, etc.) and why did you select the music to set the mood/tone of the poem?

CONTESTS:
Go to Scholastic Art & Writing to find out about the writing contest--Due Dec. 17

HMWK: For Thursday, finish reading Rattlebone and the study guide for discussion after we finish poetry presentations.

  1. The reason why I chose the poem “Nights” by Kevin Hart because of the way he sculpted his words and phrases in the poem. The way he used phrases like, “My dinner plate is cracked all round”, which makes it up to the reader to interpret what exactly he means by that one phrase. Is it literal? Is it metaphorical? He leaves it all up to the reader which makes me happy to do this poem as it leaves a lot of artistic interpretation in a movie format. A specific choice I made for the movie is that I made it mostly black and white and slowly add color as the movie goes. This is to add the emphasis of going on as he describes in the poem. The poem starts out sad almost but as it goes on, there is a resolution at the end which makes it great to show in Moviemaker. This also applies to the music. When deciding the music, I wanted a piece that was slow at the start, like the poem, but had an emphasis to the changing of mood in the poem.

  2. The reason I chose the poem "Before She Died," by Karen Chase was because it stood out to me as something that every has felt or is going to feel at one point or another: the death of a loved one (or at least that's how I interpreted it). All of my pictures and transitions were meant to relate to the lines of the poem in figurative and metaphoric ways, so I tried not to be too literal or abrupt. I wanted to be able to, as an artist, weave my feeling and opinions on the poet' feelings into the presentation in a relatable way, and I hope that is what I was capable of doing.

  3. I chose the poem "This Moment", by Eavan Boland to interpret because of its beautiful message and simplicity. "This Moment" was chosen also because it consists of a lot of imagery which is perfect for a movie. This provided my movie with beautiful visuals. The poem is very straightforward, and being this way, it also allows the reader to interpret it in many ways. The poem could be literal, which it seems, but it also could be extremely metaphorical, which is very likely as well. It is a very simple poem about a women and her love for her child, and how the whole world is at peace when she is with it. I believe that the music fit well with the video because it showed how the mother had a burning love for her child and all of the light that the child brought her.

  4. I choose the poem “Smoking” by Elton Glaser because out of the few I skimmed through this one struck me as the most interesting, seeing as though I’ve been around people who smoke all my life. Seeing as though the poem is about smoking I didn’t want to have all the pictures stereotypical with people smoking, smoke or cigarette; I chose to add plain black slides to emphasize important parts of the poem. The music, after I listened to many selections, just really fit best to me. It has a very indie-rock feel to it which I felt the poem had that feel as well.

  5. I chose ‘Summer in a Small Town’ because I liked the theme and the entire concept and could relate to it easily. I interpreted the text into photographs by putting this poem in my point of view. For example, the line “When I think of them now, I think of the place” I chose a picture of a place I would go to cope with ‘them’. I selected the music to go allow with this poem because of the title, ‘Summer in a Small Town.’ When I think of a small town, I think of cuteness and simplicity. A track with only guitar seemed the most fitting for that description.

  6. I chose the poem Sure by Arlene Tribbia. This poem is about a girls brother and how his life. Her brother has made several bad choices in life and in the end, she talks about what she and her brother used to do when they were young. the music supports the then and after affects. and the pics i used showed the actual things that are being said
