I thought she made some really good points and I could tell that she could really relate to the details she wrote in the book. I can also relate to some of the things she had described about having a fear of something.

ReplyDeleteI think that the thought of cannibalism was more important to them because it is the most violent and easy to visualize fear. Starvation in slow and uneventful compared to the vivid picture in their minds of being eaten alive.
ReplyDeleteI thought the video was unique because usually people wouldn't think the way she thought about fear and things like that. She was on a different level of thinking. People usually think on a basic level
ReplyDeleteI noticed how she said we're the authors of our fears. I agree because we create the fear in our minds. We create stories in our heads based off those fears.
ReplyDeleteyes melinda i agree
Deletethat everyone has there own different types of fears and everyone reacts in there own way and thinks differently
ReplyDeleteI think that is true. Different things are scary for different people and what you are afraid of can tell you about yourself.
DeleteI thought it brought me to thinking a lot deeper into my fears I found myself asking myself questions like Are my fears really stories? and if so are they fiction or non fiction is this really a possibility or am I just overthinking?
ReplyDeleteI don't think tthat you're overthinking it. I feel the same way. :)
DeleteI feel like what she said was completely true. Our fears are practically vivid stories. The way i come up with a lot of the things i write is through my dreams. And lots of the times the tragic events and conflicts i put my characters through have been inspired by the nightmares I've had or by events that I myself have been through
ReplyDeletei feel as if she kind knew what i feared in a way. like she knew how i felt. she helped me with that by just saying something on a video
ReplyDeleteI feel like the speech she just gave was amazing and inspiring and she really is great and knows whats shes doing. What she said is really something to think about and its going to affect me on how i write and how im going to really think about interesting meaningful stuff to put into my stories.
ReplyDeleteI think that it was good about how she said story telling is about the reader and fear.
ReplyDeleteI believe what Karen Thompson-Walker said would/can inspire many stories from anyone who take their fear and makes it their story. Taking your fear and deeply thinking about, breaking it down, asking questions could develop a lovely story about many things. Here way of thinking and writing a story is quite wonderful.

Deletein the authors ted talk when she explained her fear and what happens when you fear something made me realize that if you don't fear anything you cant be feared ....in the story she told about the island of cannibals how the other men would rather die of starvation than become someones dinner also made me realize that in order to over come something sometimes you gotta take it by the horns or re route
ReplyDeleteAs I watched I thought about my own fears, and I couldn't think of one, but I knew at some point in my life I was scared. The story that she was telling was interesting I wanted to know what happens at the end. Fear is like a story a beginning, middle and a end as she exclaimed, there's always a story behind it and I loved how she made that connection. Fear is a story.
ReplyDeleteThe TED talk brings to light that our greatest or most mysterious fears can motivate us most. We can use these fears to write, to find the answer to motivation, to help work with our fear in our own lives. It can control your life and your characters lives but it will always be there. I also found it interesting to learn what happened on Essex with those sailors. I did not know.
ReplyDeleteI thought it was an insightful speech. It was thought provoking and really made me think of my own fears and how I view them. It also made me think of how I act on my fears, and how the outcome is, as result of me reacting to fears in certain ways.
ReplyDeleteI think what she said was great and I agree with everything she said. It would have you thinking totally different about your fears ect.
ReplyDeleteI think that what she talked about is true, for everyday life in stories. For example, if a character has a small fear, it could lead them to do something that they wouldn't usually do. I also thought that her point that we often choose to act on the fear that we can picture most vividly, is very important when thinking about imagination and how it affects our storytelling. When we tell a story about a girl afraid to swim because of sharks and being to afraid to stay on the dock because of the evil lifeguard, our character will most likely stay on the dock. Sharks are more scary and you can picture them more than a mean lifeguard.
ReplyDeleteKaren Thompson Walker's Ted Talk about fear connected to her story The Miracle of Ages because she talks about how fear is only an imagination or story. It was connected because Julia's fear of the slowing was a growing story.
ReplyDeleteAfter viewing the video, I think of fears as stories. I feel like writing my own fear story. If I was in the situation as the men, I am going to choose my fears.
ReplyDeleteI feel that what she had to say about fears and story telling had more similarities than i ever would have thought. Now that she says that, it is quite remarkable how many that can be used as a strategy to write and i cant think of many authors turned there Nightmares into stories. And i'm so curious about what really happened with those men in the boat.
ReplyDeleteI liked her response about fear it was very detailed and you can tell she really experienced what she was talking about. I like how she expressed how she felt bad and good times and I like how she talked about what she was actually going through first person. I liked how she didn't exactly focus on herself she talked about how writers and readers showed fear so she was relatable to others.
