Write a short biographical paragraph about yourself in the 3rd person (he or she) for the publication of your new book. Describe yourself to let your reading public know more about who you are, what you have accomplished, what interests you, and what your life is like.

Example:
Alexander Christie is currently a 9th grade creative writing major at School of the Arts. He is 13 years old. He currently lives with his parents in Rochester, New York and has a sister studying theatre in New York City. In his free time, he enjoys reading books and writing short stories. His family is very supportive of his writing and everything else he is invested in. Although he hasn’t written any long term pieces of writing, he hopes to write and publish a novel someday. Aside from writing, he also enjoys singing, dancing, and acting in various productions. He loves living in an arts community and being able to do the things he loves. Going into his 9th grade year, he is excited to be learning new things about writing and himself. He hopes that he can continue to express himself through the arts after school, and share his knowledge with the world.

  1. I think that it was very inspirational. It tells how people correct language just for the sake of correcting it, and not taking language and appreciate it as it is growing and changing. He talked about Shakespeare, and how his creativity shaped language even today, and if you don't like how ugly, strange or weird a word may seem, it is a word nonetheless.

  2. Language is not fixed, and is constantly changing and evolving in all of its forms. Its not fair to nitpick on relatively insignificant mistakes if all your pointing out is a missing or extra apostrophe. New additions to language are seen as unusual and weird in their time, and in the future, the same people that nitpick signs glorify the past revolutionaries of the English language. I nitpick grammar a lot, and watching the video made me think about how grammar "rules" are flexible, and at some point in time, when it is right, are meant to be broken.

  3. This video spoke of grammar and writing in a more complex way compared to others. People tend to criticize others on the way they speak and how they word things, since they are used to their own ways and are too closed in. When you aren't willing to do something new, you'll never learn, and you'll stick to yourself. Fry was trying to teach us to learn more about humanity and the people involved in it. If you watch people, how they speak to others, their language, you will be able to realize how different everyone is, and you will be able to evolve yourself, specifically in your writing and how you can develop characters. I do not think my grammar is the best, and I hope to improve.

  4. I very much so believe that Mr. Fry is right. People shouldn't spend their time correcting the grammar and punctuation of silly signs in grocery stores, and instead use words for the enjoyment of others. Words are meant for communication, to tell stories and bring people together. They're not for the use of feeling "more above" people, or feeling smarter. Yes mistakes are made when it comes to grammar and punctuation, but that does not mean that they're any lower than you.

  5. I think that the video was very educational. It talked about how people sometimes use the wrong language when saying things. I didn't understand everything he way saying but I think that the video was very good.

  6. I think the video was well brought together and i like how the voice of it all kind of presented himself. He kind of asked a question at times, then answered it, I also like how in the end it came together into the word "language" because he was describing language and how people in-take language and how people's opinions are over language.

  7. I personally think the video was kind of like a broken record. It seemed like Stephen Fry was just kind of repeating the same thing over and over again, but wording it differently. I do agree with what he said, a word is still a word, even if it doesn't seem like it is.

  8. I think Stephen Fry was speaking about how people use grammar exclusively and don't make effort to "spice up" their language in their daily lives. That language is the least appreciated form of expression and art and that should change. It was sometimes hard to follow, but I think if I watched it again it would make more sense to me. I liked how it formed "language" at the end.

  9. The video showed a wider view and showed us the different ways of writing through the writers perspective. It showed things to try to avoid and what to focus on.

  10. Language is not fixed. It is made to evolve. It is inevitable that certain words will drop out of fashion or morph in spelling or change in meaning slightly. The only thing that gives people the illusion of a supreme 'correct' way to speak is writing. Dictionaries are made to help people to understand each other, which is immensely important. However, dictionaries and books cannot be interpreted as the threshold 'proper' for proper speak. Everything that exists must change. Nothing in language is static. There was a This American Life episode on this same topic in which a linguist talks about how pedants need to accept that language's nature is to change. None the less, I believe that a communicating well is essential, but not at the cost of the complexity of language. This video reinforced my views perfectly and I am glad to know that there are many people who agree that language should not be static.

  11. I think the video was done well. I think it was a little long and a bit repetitive, but he brought some good points. At times it was confusing and sometimes I didn't really get what he was saying, but I think overall it was okay. I liked how it all came together in the end with the quote "language". I like his idea of how people don't use language in the way it was intended. Most people just correct others on their punctuation and grammar, not to express emotions and feelings with their vast vocabulary.

  12. Fry talked about the way that individuals criticize others because of the way they use their language but they themselves would be the same person to dress up their words for a job interview. I enjoyed the tone that he used to convey his frustration with these people. The way the words turn out to form the word "Language" was quite interesting as well. Despite these people being rude and arrogant,I would say their criticisms would be somewhat helpful. It is fascinating to see how he views things in a more relatable to a normal person's while managing to put in language for instance like for the job interview. I found the thing as a whole a pleasant visual thing.

  14. Linden Burack is a 9th grade creative writing major at School of the Arts. He lives a 15 minute bike ride away from school in the Corn Hill neighborhood in Rochester, New York with his parents and little sister. He loves computer programming, skiing, and biking. He is very excited to be starting highschool and the rigorous creative writing program that he hopes it will improve his embarrassingly terrible reading habits and his ability to clearly express his thoughts through language. After graduating School of the Arts, he hopes to go to college to prepare for a career as a scientist. He imagines that improving his writing skills will help him to be a more effective advocate for fighting climate change and for ending the legacy of white supremacy. He is grateful for the chance to be learning new interesting material from new teachers.

  16. David Sweeney is a 14 year old Creative Writing major at School of The Arts. He loves to write a ton and uses writing as an outlet. Either a way to vent his feelings or a way to transport himself to the worlds created inside his mind. He loves to play video games in his spare time and write short stories. It's hard being a 9th grader, and he knows that personally. But he has friends and family that will get him through another year. He dreams of one day being an author and hopefully his Creative Writing classes will help him with that.

  17. Fry's video was very interesting on it's own. But the topic itself was what I found to be very interesting. It is true that some people find that language is one way and one way only and yet they find they are wrong. The way that he explained the entire thing, giving his view, and giving examples was all very well thought out. I especially like the way the video itself was set up, the way it spelled out language at the end. It was though provoking and that is what is important...
