Things Not Seen/Parts of Speech

AGENDA:

1. Morning Reflection: 9/11

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5teyjPeVco

2. Grammar:

Eights parts of speech

Noun: a person, place, thing or idea (chicken, dancehall, ocean, belief)
Pronoun: replaces a noun (he, she, it, her, them, who, which)
Adjective: describes a noun or Pronoun (lovely, tattered, obese, violet)
Verb: an action word (ransack, stir, rejuvenate, are)
Adverb: modifies or describes an adjective, verb, or other adverb (gladly, helpfully, subtly, slowly)
Preposition: links nouns and pronouns to phrases (over, under, in, near)
Conjunction: links lists, phrases, and clauses (and, but, or, when)
Interjection: conveys emotion (wow, what, ouch, man)

Writing practice:
Write twosentences in which you use all eight parts of speech. The catch? You can't use any part of speech more than once in each sentence.

Creating a sentence with all 8 is pretty straightforward as long as you understand how each part of speech functions in a sentence.
Oh, wombats live in temperate forests, and they usually eat grasses and roots.
Oh [int], wombats [n] live [v] in [prep] temperate [adj] forests [n], and [conj] they [pron] usually [adv] eat [v] grasses [n] and [conj] roots [n].
If you want to use each part of speech only once in the sentence, it’s a bit more challenging since it limits the structures you can use (for example, you can’t use coordinating or subordinating conjunctions and you’d probably have to make the sentence imperative with an implied subject):
Hey, carefully walk with the wombat and him.

Hey [int], carefully [adv] walk [v] with [prep] the [adj] wombat [n] and [conj] him [pron].
The problem with creating sentences using all 8 parts of speech is that they all require interjections, and having multiple successive sentences with interjections can be repetitive and cumbersome, but it’s definitely possible to create such sentences.

  1. I think the video was interesting. It showed the construction of the memorial for the people who died, which means a lot to the families and anyone who was close or took part in it and survived. I think the end result was pretty, I liked the lights. Although I did expect it to be more built up, but I would understand why they didn't do that either. In all, I appreciated the video and it means a lot for what happened. Having something negative staying around isn't good.

  2. I believe that the building of the memorial was kind of cool. Yes, it's very depressing because those holes, and that damage should've never happened. But at the same time, the people building turned something horrible into something absolutely amazing. They made something so sad, a sight to be seen.

  3. I really liked seeing how the ruins of buildings filled with such bad memories was turned into something so beautiful. That over time people can enjoy and remember what stood there before. It was nice seeing how even though it took so long, eventually the fountains were built with hard work and determination. It shows how even if something horrible happens, it can be turned into something beautiful. The fountain now reminds people of 9/11 and how many people's lives changed that day, but it reminds people that there is hope for the future.

  4. I thought the video was very interesting. It showed how hard people worked to honor the lives lost during 9/11. It's an amazing place, and you can't help but be overwhelmed by emotion while walking the same paths of the families who have lost. The memories and feelings are very strong at the memorial, and it's great to remember all the brave people who were at the attack.

  5. I think that the memorial museum was a great project. 9/11 was a tragic event and the way that they made sure it was remembered, was amazing. It's truly fantastic that the ten years were fully gone through to create a beautiful memorial. The fact that people can go to honor those that died is perfect.

  6. I liked that video for a couple reasons. I think the memorials are really cool and the video made me want to go and see them in New York City. I also really enjoyed the time lapse and how it grew. It's really interesting how that was over the span of ten years. I think 9/11 was a really awful time in our history and I'm very glad they spent so much time on making a beautiful memorial to honor all the people who were unfortunately caught in that and their families. I'm glad they made something nice out of the bad reminder.

  7. The video was fascinating to watch as it made a beautiful memorial for those who were affected by the 9/11 attack. Watching the construction time lapse was truly something amazing to watch. Using the site where many have lost their life but instead using it to as a place to remember those who died. Quite uplifting for many.

  8. I think that it is really amazing how they constructed the memorial in the places were the towers stood/fell. I also think the awesome amount of man-power and man-hours that were put into building this memorial is an astounding showing of the commitment of other citizens to honor the death of those who had fallen. It was a good choice not to build anything on top of the spot, and instead preserve the hole in the ground where the towers foundations stood, honoring the site by building something beautiful on top of the site of such a terrible and unexpected tragedy.

  9. I think that the video was kind of sad but interesting. I liked how they showed the before and after of the buildings. I also liked how they turned something sad into something beautiful for the people that died. They made a place to honor the people that were gone.

  11. I think that the video was very amazing and eye catching i loved how it didn't skip over time and it did it for days at a time. 9/11 always makes me thankful for my mom because my mom saved my sister and brother and its always a day to think. I also like how now its a memorial and people just didn't try to forget it and not do anything about it...people built and tried to help us remember the brave people who saved people and remember the ones who passed.

  13. I have been to the 9/11 memorial and although others don't find it depressing, when I went I saw the lives of unsuspecting people getting swept away into a cruel dark pit. That greedy pit stole these people's lives. I saw innocent drops of water carried into the firm clutches of death. Death is a robber.
