So, are you ready to write some magical realism?
5. The lady and the priest get closer due to how the prison works. They talk a lot about the death row, and get closer, how the priests life was. They both chose this career because they felt dark, in a sense. Their callings sustain them emotionally because it pushes them. It's a way for them to overcome what they've gone through, too.
ReplyDelete6. The narrator has become mute and lonely, but not because he dislikes it. He takes a love for reading, and yet doesn't care if he dies or not because he thinks he deserves it. He does feel pity for the lady though, which is sometimes why he wishes he could say it's okay. Rehabilitation is good depending on who or what it is for. I'm not sure about our prisons nowadays, because I don't know much about them. Possibly, we could look into their issues and figure out what it is that made them snap, whether it was mental problems or their life in general.
7. I think it is going against morality because you are doing the exact same thing they did, killing someone. It's still used because they are accustomed to it, I'm not sure they can figure out something new to change.
8. I don't think you can ever blame a child for what they have gone through. A child never asked to be born, or to live through the things they did. Depending on the negativity, it will hurt the child. If that continues, then the child will break down and most likely they'll become broken. People do terrible things because they don't care what happens, they enjoy seeing others in pain. Others just don't know better. We carry a ton of responsibility, and yet it doesn't go through.
5. The lady and the priest are forced to interact with each other due to their jobs. But they also like the perspective each one gives and they use each other a sounding boards for their ideas. On pages 122 and 123 they discuss hope and why they do their jobs. They maintain their sanity by only considering the criminals, not the victims and their crimes.
ReplyDelete6. Prison is where the narrator learned to read. But it is also where he is constantly scared and distressed about being hurt. Some people claim that jail is for justice. Justice is a crime. Punishment is only a way for angry victims to get back at criminals. In my opinion, the only purpose of jail is containment and rehabilitation. The death penalty is pointless. Deterrent comes from losing years of your life. I'm not saying jail should be five star, but it certainty needs to be viewed and approached differently. Not punishment, containment and rehabilitation.
7. The death penalty is used because victims and their families are mad. They want justice. They feel cheated. So they support the taking what they feel is justified; someone's life.
8. We are certainly products of our experiences. Free will is not necessary. Love and a feeling of safety and care is what is valued. Pain in the world comes from unpredictability, that we can prepare for but never cure. Our jobs are to help others prepare for their life problems, not so that they are ready, but so they are supported... So that they can feel cared for and safe.

The golden horses that the narrator believes exist below the prison that are in reality generators.
How does the title set the tone for the book? How does it relate to the story told?
The title keeps you looking for the positive aspect of the situation, which is at first challenging to find. It helps you realize that hope is a blessing.
How does the author humanize her characters?
She reveals their loves and pleasures and guilt. She explains their history and their problems. She reveals their thoughts.
Discuss the overall structure of the novel. How does it work?
Each chapter is split into many sections. Each section generally changes point of view or acts as a pause to let the things in the previous section sink in. Because of these sections, the book can tell the same story from many different points of view.
How are the personalities and histories of the various characters revealed through small details?
Sometimes, things are revealed through flashbacks induced by a traumatic situation in the story. Other times, the are revealed through conversation. When the characters in the conversation reach a mutual respect, they have learned the most about each other.
5. The lady and priest have to interact as part of their jobs. But they still form a bond and contribute to each others lives. They discuss hope and why they do their jobs despite them being cruel and unrewarding.
ReplyDelete6.The prison is where the narrator learned to read. But despite that fond memory, he is still afraid of something happening to him. People claim that jail is for justice. But the treatment of criminals in jail is really quite detestable in the U.S. Instead of focusing on reforming criminals, it instead focuses on harsh punishment, shame, and isolation.
7. The death penalty is used because people are vengeful. They want to have their person back. But the next best thing is killing the criminal and getting revenge.

ReplyDelete6. The narrator is mute. He has been since childhood. He loves reading, the place of comfort was the library. He does not care if he dies and is quite eccentric. He feels bad for the lady and wishes he could tell her to talk to the priest. Prison life is still bad and prisoners still get hurt. Rehabilitation is good because you can't blame people for their illnesses.
8. You can't blame a child for their childhood. People can get broken easily. Definitely children. People enjoy hurting others because they are sadistic and because it does not affect themselves. They are greedy.
7. The death penalty is killing someone, you are doing the same thing they did. You are committing the same crime and if they did deserve it, you are somewhat similar, even if it is for justice.
