Scientists have known about stromatolites for years from fossil formations and in 1961 they discovered a living community of stromatolites at Shark Bay on the remote northwest coast of Australia. This was most unexpected an it was some years before the scientists realized quite what they had found. Shark Bay is as much a tourist attraction that something miles from anywhere can be today. Boardwalks have been built out into the bay so visitors can stroll over the water and get a good look at the stromatolites quietly respiring just beneath the surface. I stated this in an earlier book but they are gray, lusterless, and look like very large cow-pats. It is a curiously giddying moment when you find yourself staring at the living remnants of Earth from 3.5 billion years ago.

ReplyDeleteScientists have known about stromatolites for years from fossil formations and they got a real surprise in 1961, discovering a community of living stromatolites in Shark Bay on the remote northwest coast of Australia. It was so unexpected that scientists took years to realize what they had found. Dozens of miles from anywhere, Shark bay is a tourist attraction today, just as much of one as a place hundreds of miles away. Boardwalks have been built out onto the bay so that visitors can stroll over the water and get a good look at the stromatolites that quietly respirate just beneath the surface of the bay. I stated in an earlier book that they are gray, lusterless, and look like very large cow-pats. It is a curiously giddy moment when you find yourself staring at 3.5 billion year old living remnants of the Earth.
For years, scientists have known about stromatolites from fossil formations, but in 1961 they got a real surprise after they discovered a community of them living at Shark Bay on the remote northwest coast of Australia. This was most unexpected, in fact, it was years before scientists have realized what they had found.
ReplyDeleteShark Bay is a tourist attraction today, at least it is as much as a tourist attraction as it is a place of hundreds of miles from anywhere. Boardwalks have been built out into the bay so visitors can stroll over the water where they can get a good look at the stromatolites, as they quietly respire beneath the surface. They are grey, lusterless, and they look very much like very large cow-pats as I stated earlier in the book. The moment where you can find yourself staring at the living remnants of earth from 3.5 billion years ago, you'll realize that it's a curiously giddying moment.

This was most unexpected and it was some years before scientists realized quite what they had found. Today, Shark Bay is a tourist attraction, or at least as much of a tourist attraction it can be while being dozens of miles from anywhere. Boardwalks have been built into the bay so visitors can stroll over the water to get a good look at the stromatolites that quietly respire beneath the surface. They are lusterless, gray, and as I stated in an earlier book, they look like very large cow-pats. ReplyDeleteScientists knew about stromatolites for years from fossil formation discovered in 1961 when they discovered a living community of stromatolites at Shark bay on the northwest coast of Australia. The discovery was very unexpected with scientist not realizing what they discovered for some years. Shark Bay, a tourist attraction today, is as much as tourist attraction as a place hundred of miles away. Boardwalks have been built into the bay that visitors can stroll and enjoy the sight while stromatolites respire underneath the surface. Stromatolites are lusterless and gray which was mentioned earlier and they also appears as very large cow-pats. It was giddy moment when discovering living remnants of Earth from 3.5 billion years ago.
