  2. I learned about the environment of the book. Alaska is an overwhelming place, and the landscape is bigger than civilization. They also have a month where there is no direct sunlight, which also adds to the darkness in Alaska. She said because of that, it makes you appreciate the sunlight because they have not seen it for weeks. She said the landscape could completely dominate her writing and that she tries her best to not let it.

  4. How extreme the weather is in Alaska, there is even a month without sunlight. I don't know if this will effect the book but I think it could provide an interesting problem for the characters.

  5. Alaskan terrain will be important to any story that includes it because it is very overwhelming and crucial to the way of life there. As Ivey puts it, it is beautiful but a little terrifying at the same time.

  6. Some things I learned form the article is that Ivey grew up in Alaska. She also really loves folklore stories and finds them very interesting. Ivey says that Alaska's landscape is beautiful but also a little scary. I think this a really good way to think of nature, because it is pretty but it is very powerful.
