American War Short Story Assignment

Nonlinear narrative/Metafiction/Intertextuality

AGENDA:

EQ: What is accomplished by a nonlinear narrative scheme (see question 2)

Definitions:

Nonlinear narrativedisjointed narrative or disrupted narrative is a narrative technique, sometimes used in literature, film, hypertext websites and other narratives, where events are portrayed, for example out of chronological order, or in other ways where the narrative does not follow the direct causality pattern of the events featured, such as parallel distinctive plot lines, dream immersions or narrating another story inside the main plot-line. It is often used to mimic the structure and recall of human memory, but has been applied for other reasons as well.

Metafiction is a literary device used self-consciously and systematically to draw attention to a work's status as an artifact. It poses questions about the relationship between fiction and reality, usually using irony and self-reflection. It can be compared to presentational theatre, which does not let the audience forget it is viewing a play; metafiction forces readers to be aware that they are reading a fictional work.

Intertextuality is the shaping of a text's meaning by another text. Intertextual figures include:allusionquotationcalqueplagiarismtranslationpastiche and parody.[1][2][3] Intertextuality is a literary device that creates an ‘interrelationship between texts’ and generates related understanding in separate works (“Intertextuality”, 2015). These references are made to influence that reader and add layers of depth to a text, based on the readers’ prior knowledge and understanding. Intertextuality is a literary discourse strategy (Gadavanij, n.d.) utilised by writers in novels, poetry, theatre and even in non-written texts (such as performances and digital media). Examples of intertextuality are an author’s borrowing and transformation of a prior text, and a reader’s referencing of one text in reading another.

Intertextuality does not require citing or referencing punctuation (such as quotation marks) and is often mistaken for plagiarism (Ivanic, 1998). Intertextuality can be produced in texts using a variety of functions including allusion, quotation and referencing (Hebel, 1989). However, intertextuality is not always intentional and can be utilised inadvertently. As philosopher William Irwin wrote, the term “has come to have almost as many meanings as users, from those faithful to Kristeva’s original vision to those who simply use it as a stylish way of talking about allusion andinfluence.

  2. Muller investigation. He is the head of the Smooth Separation Committee in the United Nations and the son of a man jailed for his involvement in russian collusion. He tells the story in 2070, 50 years after the muller investigation concluded. He 55 years old meaning he was 5 when Muller was fired and four when Muller sent his dad to jail he tells the story. This is the story that the son tells about his father, his resentment of his father’s actions, and what his father did to the world. He lives in NYC and that is were his family lived when he was a kid. The purpose for the collusion was to get United States citizens distracted when Russia invades the countries along their western border. The Anderson investigation was top secret and was after Trump. It revealed all of the secrets the muller investigation didn’t including that the main character's father framed muller from jail by paying a porn star to admit to a harassment case with muller that never really happened.

It will start out with the son reflecting on his relationship with his dad. This is written right after his father got out of prison and killed himself, one day before the Muller and Anderson investigations are released.
Then it will go to 2019 and talk about home life and his father’s arrest. His father worked for Cohen in organizing meetings between Cohen and Russian agents. This will end with a knock on the door of his father’s office.
Then there will be a thing from the NYT that talks about a sexual harassment case centered around Muller. He is fired on June 4th 2020 by trump. The article will quote parts of a speech given by Trump about how unacceptable to amount of sexual harassment occurring in society right now. It will briefly mention that this took place just after Muller fired the main characters dad.
Then it will go into another article. It is a transcript of a fox news broadcast from April 22nd 2020. It says the Russia just sent troops into Ukraine. It will give different comparisons of world leader reactions. The british leader, who changed 3 times in the last year, says they would act but ever since brexit they haven't had the power. Putin will claim they only want the russian half of Ukraine and that will be debated. Trump will try to make the claim that they deserve to have back the land they once have and that the US will take no action.
It will then go to what the main character felt (age 6) and what NYC’s reaction was.
